Experiencing Gender Inequality: Listen

In the Workplace

My interviewee does work in a very male-dominated career and place, so she has had plenty of personal experiences with gender inequality and discrimination. There are commonly known issues such as the wage gap as well as bias in choosing for promotion, even though she has the same or sometimes better credentials than her male associates. Another act of inequality she brought up is how women’s voices and opinions are not taken seriously. As she explains in the video clip, there have been times when her ideas have been shut down or not even listened to because of the sexist mindset that women are too emotional or worked up to make rational decisions. She continues to say how women buy into this, working harder to be taken seriously but then being hesitant in speaking up so as to not be mocked or judged.

Students in the Younger Generation

Because her career has her interacting with students younger than her, Rayat has witnessed how gender inequality continues to plague the younger generations she teaches. She has seen female students be underrated in the rewards and recognition they receive. She does bring up her idea of how this could be because those groups that choose who to give these rewards are often comprised of just men. This does mean that many female students are not given the same advantages to help further their education. But at the same time, these students show how gender inequality permeates into the decisions they make. She talks about how harsh her student evaluations can be, even though her behavior is comparable to many male teachers. The vocabulary they choose to use is notably different.
