SOC&220 Final Project
My Interview
For this project, we had to interview someone that embodied our idea of feminism. For me, that was Sundeep Rayat, an old friend of my mother. With her, I discussed her own ideas, experiences, and opinions concerning feminism and gender inequality
Introduction
Sandeep Rayat
I decided to interview a close friend of my mother who she has known since college. The friend in question’s name is Sandeep Rayat and she is originally from Punjab, India. She immigrated to the US to continue her education here. For grad school, she went to Ohio State University where she also received her Ph.D., and then went to Massachusetts University for her Post Doctorate. She is currently employed at Ball State University in Indiana as a Professor of Chemistry and Chem Research.
Defining Feminism
While she does consider herself to be a feminist, Rayat did state that she wishes there was no need for such a term. She elaborates by saying how the word was created to solve a problem that really shouldn’t exist in the first place. As for her own personal definition, she said that Feminism to her was supporting other women and creating opportunities through the resources you have. The example she gave is that although she experiences gender inequality in her own life, she realizes that she is in a place of higher privileged than many other women. But in this way, she has the means to help using what she has rather than ignoring the problems just because they don’t specifically apply to her.
